The Concept, Benefits, Types, and Relationship of "AZiyada" (Addition) to Meaning .
Abstract
Word augmentation, or simply augmentation as known in the field of Arabic morphology, is a topic that has drawn endless discussions and divided Arab morphologists through the ages. The present paper explores this concept in language and terminology and looks at its importance in the Arabic language. It further elaborates on four of the augmentation types described by Arabic scholars. These are: new word creation with gemination on a three-consonant root word, vowel elongation, verb creation through noun derivation and second root consonant gemination. Finally, the research carefully examines the complex question of the relationship between meaning and form.
