Abstract

Language policy in Algeria has operated through an "in vitro" approach since independence, disregarding actual language practices. This has led to a degenerated educational situation in the education sector characterized by a discontinuity in the language of instruction for scientific subjects between secondary and university levels in Algeria; a situation that could be described as a "linguistic divide." This paper aims to shed light on the current linguistic situation in its relationship to language teaching and learning, on the one hand, and to the linguistic reality as it exists in the labor market, on the other.
