Employing computational linguistics in the service of Arabic linguistic studies: efforts and results

Abstract
The study of the Arabic language through the use of computational linguistics (informatics) is one of the latest linguistic trends in contemporary Arabic linguistics. This research deals with the efforts of contemporary Arab researchers - in general and linguists in particular - in adapting computer technologies to serve Arabic linguistic studies, in terms of phonetics, morphology, grammar, dictionary, and semantics, and the extent to which they are useful in addressing their various issues. As is known, the relationship between the computer and the Arabic language is based on two basic axes: the first is the theoretical axis, and the other is the applied axis .In light of this, the researcher reviews the emergence of the computer trend in the study of Arabic language sciences, the conditions and circumstances that contributed to its formation through individual efforts, or institutional and official efforts, and the problems that it faced in light of the specificity of the Arabic language, software, and computers, and the solutions that were presented to address those problems. The research also addresses the results of investing in this trend in the field of teaching Arabic to its children and speakers of other languages, and in the field of machine translation, Arabization, linguistic statistics, automatic processing of sounds, morphology, grammar, lexicon, and semantics, and concludes by defining the features of this modern trend in Arabic linguistics.
