Policy on the Use of Generative AI (GenAI) and AI-assisted Technologies in the Journal AL-Lisaniyyat

For Authors

The journal AL-Lisaniyyat acknowledges the growing role of generative AI (GenAI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic writing. This policy concerns only the writing and presentation process, not the use of AI in research design or data analysis.

  • Permissible Use: Authors may use generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, DeepL Write, Grammarly) solely to enhance clarity, grammar, and style. The use of these tools must remain under human supervision, and authors must critically evaluate and edit all AI-generated outputs. Authors are fully responsible and accountable for the content, including any misinformation, bias, or inaccuracies introduced by the technology.

  • Disclosure Requirement: Any use of GenAI or AI-assisted technologies must be explicitly disclosed in the manuscript, either in a footnote or in a dedicated statement (before the references). This promotes transparency and ethical integrity between authors, reviewers, editors, and readers.

  • No Authorship for AI: AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor cited as authors. Authorship implies responsibility, accountability, and the capacity to approve, revise, and defend a manuscript—abilities exclusive to human contributors.

  • Originality and Ethics: Authors must ensure their submission is original, respects copyright and third-party rights, and adheres to AL-Lisaniyyat’s editorial and ethical policies. Authors are also responsible for ensuring that all contributors meet the criteria for authorship.

Use of AI in Figures, Images, and Graphical Material

  • Prohibited Uses: Authors may not use GenAI or AI-assisted tools to generate, alter, or manipulate images, figures, or illustrations in submitted manuscripts. This includes introducing, removing, or modifying visual elements. Basic adjustments such as brightness, contrast, or color balance are allowed if they do not distort the data or misrepresent results.

  • Permitted Research Uses: If AI tools are part of the research methodology (e.g., in computational linguistics or data visualization), this must be fully described in the Methods section, including the name, version, and parameters of the AI tool used.

  • Cover Art and Graphical Abstracts: The use of AI-generated artwork for covers or abstracts is not permitted unless prior written authorization is obtained from the editorial board, and all legal rights are cleared and properly attributed.

For Reviewers

  • Confidentiality and Integrity: Reviewers must treat submitted manuscripts as confidential. It is strictly prohibited to upload any part of a manuscript or review report to an AI tool. This ensures the protection of intellectual property and personal data, and upholds the confidentiality of the peer review process.

  • Human evaluation only: GenAI technologies must not be used to scientifically evaluate an article. Peer review requires critical thinking, nuanced analysis, and ethical judgment — tasks that only humans can perform. The reviewer remains solely responsible for the content of their report.
