Theoretical reflexions about a controversial issue opposing the Basranean kufan Grammarians

Abstract

AL-ANBAARIY's report, in (AL-INSAAF), concerning the position of the Kufan grammarians as to why the first radical-W- is deleted in the non derived verbs of the (fadila) class, is very perplexing indeed:


According to the Kufans , these verbs are subject to deletion because they are (mutasiddiy) , that is , in the usal terminology, (transitive), and the (fadila) class is (laazim), that is intransitive, and thus fails to meet the required conditions for deletion.


Now , one can easily find verbs of the firs class which do not accept (direct object) and verbs of the second class which do.


But unless one accepts the very unlikely hypothes is that the Kufan+ grammarians xere grossly ignorant, one has to suppose that they attached to the word (laazim), used to qualify the fadila class, a meaning other than the Basran one wich has become (standard).


Is there a reasonable and possibly intersting meaning the word (laazim) which can be significantly associated with thr fadila class of verbs? that is the question this paper tries to answer...
