A Pragmatic Study of the Qur’anic Discourse of Divine Praise of the Prophet Muhammad : ﷺThe Verse “And indeed, you are of a great moral character” as a Model

Abstract

This pragmatic study aims to analyze the Qur’anic verse “And indeed, you are of a great moral character” (Surah Al-Qalam, v.4) from both linguistic and ethical perspectives. It explores the dimensions of Qur’anic discourse through divine intent, the impact of the message on the Prophet ﷺ, and its educational and social influence on the Companions and the Muslim community. The study demonstrates that this verse employs various pragmatic mechanisms, such as the style of oath and the use of grammatical emphasis, which reinforce the moral message and strengthen the Prophet’s role as an exemplary model. It also highlights the importance of applying this type of analysis in contemporary religious and educational discourse, by drawing on the Prophet’s moral exemplariness in shaping both individual and collective behavior. The study concludes by emphasizing the necessity of extending the pragmatic approach to other Qur’anic texts and integrating it into educational curricula, in order to enhance understanding of the texts both religiously and linguistically, while recommending its use in the development of contemporary Islamic discourse.
