The Influence of Parental Linguistic and Cultural Representations on the Early Use of French

Abstract
Algeria has long been characterized by the coexistence of multiple languages, with French occupying a prominent position in society. Within the field of sociolinguistics, this study examines and analyzes the representations and linguistic practices associated with early bilingualism (mother tongue/French) within the family context. The research was conducted in the city of Setif, where questionnaires were distributed to gather insights into parents’ attitudes and the strategies they employ to support their children’s early acquisition of the French language in a natural environment, using the resources available within the family. Our findings reveal that, in their effort to prepare their children for a brighter future full of opportunities, parents-regardless of gender-are dedicated to incorporating this language into their children's daily lives. Regarding the parents' level of education, it appears to have no significant impact on early bilingualism, as even non-educated parents are determined to introduce the French language to their children at a young age. Lastly, we found that parental representations strongly encourage the early acquisition of French among children.
