Gender Portrayal In The Algerian English Textbook ‘my Book Of English’ For Third Year Primary School
Main Article Content
Abstract
Gender stereotyping is prevalent in many textbooks, especially English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks. This study analyzed gender portrayal in the English textbook “My Book of English” for third year primary school (3PS), and which aims to identify gender stereotypes. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the analysis confirmed the presence of gender bias. The illustrations predominantly feature males, and the depicted occupations for men and women are often traditional and outdated. Men’s activities are frequently shown outdoors, while women’s activities are mostly indoors, reflecting negative gender stereotypes. The study aims to provide teachers and textbook authors/inspectors insights on gender representations, encouraging them to recognize and reduce gender bias.
