The Role of Schema and Overall Word Form in Recognition of Words Written in Arabic

Abstract
The aim of this study is to highlight the morphological characteristics of the Arabic language and more precisely to explore the role of the vowel pattern and the overall shape of words in the recognition of written Arabic words. Through the use of the masked priming paradigm (Ferrand and Grainger, 1994; Grainger and Jacob, 1999; Segui and Grainger, 1990), we conducted two experiments; the first concerns the vowel scheme and the second deals with the overall form of the written word. The results show the absence of the effect of vowel pattern and argue for a reversed effect of global form on the recognition of written words.
